Son Of Pizza Shop Employee Shoots Would-Be Robber In Face In Spring Garden, Police Say

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia police say the son of a pizza shop employee shot a robber in the face in Spring Garden Thursday night. It happened at the Bold Pizza shop at 15th and Spring Garden Streets just before 10 p.m.

According to police, three men attempted to rob the CVS Pharmacy at 490 North Broad Street around 9:45 p.m. They ran off with no money.

A short time later, authorities got a call about a robbery at the pizza shop. Employees outside the building told officers one suspect went into the shop. When he took money from the cash register, an employee fought back.

"The cash register was open, there was money on the floor and there was also some broken glass inside the store," Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

As the two struggled, the employee's 14-year-old son grabbed a gun from under the counter and fired, hitting the suspect in the face. It was previously believed the employee was the one who fired the gun.

A trail of blood led officers to the suspect at the Spring Garden subway station. He was taken to Jefferson Hospital in critical condition.

"When police went down to that location, they located a shooting victim, a 33-year-old male shot in his face," Chief Inspector Small said.

Authorities are still trying to track down the other two suspects.
