Philadelphia's 'Mummy Bandit' Pleads Guilty

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The man who became known at the "mummy bandit," robbing banks in Philadelphia and the suburbs for over a year while swaddled in bandages, has pleaded guilty in federal court.

Hiram Adams, 45, has pleaded guilty to five bank jobs, all with a demand note claiming he had a gun or bomb.

Federal prosecutor William Weiland says Adams wore disguises that earned him the "mummy bandit" nickname.

"On two occasions he took a gauze bandage and wrapped it around the circumference of his head, from the top of his head to his chin.  And he also had a tendency to wear a gauze bandage around his right hand, and that was apparent in the surveillance footage that was taken from the banks," said Weiland.

Adams was arrested in August and confessed. He faces a maximum of 100 years in prison and a federal guideline sentence of about six years when he is sentenced in February.
