Scattered showers in Philadelphia region Friday; beach weather improves through Memorial Day Weekend
Good news, our Memorial Day Weekend weather is improving!
Now for the not so good news, it will be cooler than average with sun and afternoon clouds and spotty instability showers on Friday.
In 2024, we were spoiled over the holiday weekend with highs in the upper 80s and plenty of sunshine. But last year was an exception. Over the past 5 years, rain has fallen on half of the holiday weekend days.
This year will feel very different with highs running well below average in the mid-60s to low 70s, and Monday looking the sunniest and warmest. These days are probably better for the boardwalk than the sand.
Saturday will be mainly sunny with a few clouds drifting through. Sunday will be mostly sunny, the pick day of the weekend. Monday will be sunny with increasing late-day clouds.
So, what's causing the less-than-perfect weekend weather? The same upper-level low that brought us cold and rainy conditions this week. It is still to our north and moving away at a snail's pace off the New England coastline.
Memorial Day forecast
As the low departs, our weather will improve each day through Monday, which will be mostly sunny and warmer in the low 70s.
Late Monday, another storm system will slide past to our south and bring increasing clouds to lower Delaware and parts of Cape May County.
More rain next week
Skies turn cloudy on Tuesday, but temperatures remain warm in the upper 70s. Enjoy the dry conditions while you can because Tuesday night, a larger storm system arrives from the west with rain developing overnight. That rain will once again persist through the end of next week.
Temperatures will range from the mid-60s on Wednesday to the mid-70s on Thursday.
Consider this, we are still in spring, not summer. On June 20, summer will officially begin in Philadelphia. Until then, we will bounce between spring-like and summer-like conditions.
