Shooter on stolen bike kills man, steals e-bike and flees scene in Southwest Philadelphia, police say
A man is in custody after riding a stolen bike to fatally shoot someone, then robbing someone of an e-bike and fleeing the scene in Southwest Philadelphia on Wednesday night, police said.
Philadelphia police say a 19-year-old man was walking near a corner store at Dicks Avenue and 66th Street when another 19-year-old man, dressed all in black and riding a bike, pedaled up to him, got off the bike, and shot the man from behind several times shortly after 10 p.m., Inspector D F Pace told CBS News Philadelphia.
After that, the shooter stood over the victim and fired several more shots, Pace said. The shooter then ran to a nearby block on Daggett Street, where they robbed someone of their e-bike and fled.
Police were called to the scene and found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds. They took him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at 10:21 p.m. Police are not identifying the victim until charges are filed and relatives are notified.
The investigation eventually led officers to the corner of 84th Street and Bartram Avenue near Philadelphia International Airport. There, officers arrested the suspected shooter and recovered a gun. The man is expected to be charged in connection with the shooting.
The bike that the suspected shooter rode to the scene was also stolen, Pace said. Investigators learned that a short while before the shooting, a man stopped a Route 37 SEPTA bus at the intersection of 64th Street and Lindbergh Boulevard, took a bike off the bus's front bike rack, and fled.
The bike owner reported the theft to police and later arrived at the crime scene and confirmed it was their bike.
