Philadelphia Officials Host Event To Show Appreciation For Area Block Captains

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Philadelphia hosted a rally this afternoon at the Pennsylvania convention center for 1,500 of its block captains.

The event was to show appreciation to block captains and junior block captains with lunch, live entertainment and raffle drawings. It also was a time for residents to see what resources are available for their communities.

"There is a variety of community service organizations, non-profit organizations and government agencies that are all here informing them about the services they can have to improve the quality from town watch to L&I and of course the streets department. They can learn about recycling," said Carlton Williams, deputy streets commissioner.

Roseann Rocco is a block captain for the 6500 block of Torresdale Avenue in the Tacony section. She was gathering information on how to keep her block looking good. "It makes me feel good to see our neighborhood clean and everyone getting along because you should love your neighbor that's an important thing."

Next Saturday there is a city-wide clean up effort scheduled, you can get involved by going to phillyspringcleanup.com.
