Phila. Democratic Lawmakers Unite Behind One Candidate For Attorney General

By Pat Loeb

PHILADLEPHIA (CBS) -- Montgomery County Commissioner Josh Shapiro's quest to be Attorney General got a boost Thursday.

Philadelphia's democratic lawmakers are solidly behind Shapiro. About a dozen council members and state legislators took turns singing his praises at an event in City Hall, but more importantly, it was an inherent pledge to mobilize their own organizations -- honed through years of running for office themselves.

As Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown put it:

"He brings the right stuff but we have to bring the work."

Shapiro faces a three-way democratic primary, with the toughest challenge from Pittsburgh's district attorney, so turnout in Philadelphia will be important. Shapiro says he's grateful and humbled by the support.

"This alliance, this broad coalition we're building, this statement we're making here today with leaders from every corner of Philadelphia sends a clear message to the people of Philadelphia and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania that we are united in this cause of justice and fairness and equity in our system."

The primary is April 26th.
