Phila. Shooting Victim: Gunman Tried To Spare Black People
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – For the first time on Tuesday the world heard from Philadelphia native, Orlando shooting victim Patience Carter.
Carter recited a poem and recounted the graphic details of the night that possibly changed her life forever.
From a bathroom stall, she says she heard the gunman call 911. The shooter now identified as Omar Mateen, allegedly pledged his allegiance to ISIS, before saying that the attack was a result of America's bombing of his country.
After the call, she says he spoke in Arabic, before addressing the victims directly.
"Are there any black people in here?" Mateen asked, according to Carter.
Too afraid, she remained silent while a man lying next to her responded saying there were about 6 to 7 African Americans present.
"I don't have a problem with black people," Mateen reportedly said in reply. "This is about my country. You guys suffered enough."
The Philadelphia native says Mateen's motive was very clear to the survivors.
"Laying in their blood and other people's blood… we were very clear on what his motive was."
According to Carter, "the gunman wasn't going to stop killing people until he was killed or until he felt his message got out there."
Carter and her friends were on vacation in Orlando celebrating graduation, and while she and one of her friends survived, one didn't make it out alive.
