PFF Eagles Grades: Linebackers Struggled Vs. Falcons

By Andrew Porter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Last year, the Eagles finished second in the NFL with 49 sacks. The Falcons entered 2015 with a makeshift offensive line, coming off a horrid season.

It seemed like a disastrous matchup for Atlanta, at home. But it wasn't.

To the Falcons' credit, the Eagles were held to just one sack (Fletcher Cox) and outside linebackers Connor Barwin and Brandon Graham combined for just seven tackles and zero QB hits. They turned just 54 combined pass rushes into one distribution, according to PFF.

Sack specialist Vinny Curry had just one tackle and zero QB hits in limited snaps.

Furthermore, while new Eagles insider backer Kiko Alonso saved a touchdown with his ridiculous catch, other than that he was rather invisible. And veteran inside linebacker DeMeco Ryans looked slow and rusty, missing a couple of key tackles on Atlanta run plays. Alonso played 49 snaps, Ryans just 28.

Pro Football Focus' Week 1 grades reflected the disappointing Eagles' LB play (how PFF grades their players).

Negative PFF Eagles Week 1 grades:

  • Kiko Alonso -3.6
  • Connor Barwin -2.5
  • DeMeco Ryans - 2.0
  • Brandon Graham -0.8

On the positive side, the Falcons managed just 105 rushing yards on 35 carries (3.0 average), thanks to the Eagles' dominant defensive lineman and Mychal Kendricks. Kendricks led the Eagles in tackles with 10. Fletcher Cox recorded the Eagles' only sack (he also had a strip negated by an Alonso penalty), but Bennie Logan was their best player on Monday night according to PFF.

Malcolm Jenkins, despite dropping two interceptions, had an excellent night. And RB Darren Sproles (5/50 rushing, 7/76 receiving) and RT Lane Johnson were graded as the Eagles' best offensive players, as that sweep to the right was working brilliantly in the second half.

Positive PFF Eagles Week 2 grades:

  • Bennie Logan +3.1
  • Malcolm Jenkins +2.9
  • Lane Johnson +2.8
  • Darren Sproles +2.2
  • Mychal Kendricks +2.1
  • Fletcher Cox +1.8

For what it's worth, Sam Bradford was given a -1.4 PFF grade. While he did complete 36 passes for 336 yards, only four were more than 10 yards. And not surprisingly, Julio Jones (9/141/2) was the games best player earning a grade of +5.7, as he bullied Eagles CB Byron Maxwell all night long.

It's only Week 1 and PFF grading isn't flawless or anything, so take it all with a grain of salt. Still, this gives you at the very least an idea, of how some of the Eagles performed, or didn't perform, in a disappointing Week 1 loss.
