HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) - Democrats in the Pennsylvania legislature are pouncing on comments by the House Republican leader about the newly enacted, controversial voter ID law.
At a weekend meeting of the state GOP committee, House Majority Leader Mike Turzai said the new voter ID law will "allow" Mitt Romney to win Pennsylvania in November.
At a Tuesday morning capitol news conference, legislative Democrats , including Senator Vince Hughes of Philadelphia, called Turzai's comments the smoking gun of the law's true intent.
"We told you so. We told you that was the deal. We told you this was all about winning an election, not trying to deal with some kind of alleged election fraud," Hughes said.
Turzai's spokesman defends his boss's comment, saying Turzai meant that assuring voter integrity will make for a fairer election.
Senate Democrats, who say they are currently doing research in advance of their own legal action separate from lawsuits that have already been filed, say Turzai's comments are likely to be used in court.
