DEPTFORD TWP., N.J. (CBS) - A Deptford Township police officer has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault in connection with a shooting that took place early Saturday morning at his home in Gloucester County, New Jersey.
Authorities say 29-year-old James Stuart, who has been with the department for about five years, was charged with the shooting of 27-year-old David Compton at James' home on Stanford Avenue around 5 a.m.
Compton, who is not a police officer, is in critical condition at Cooper Medical Center with a single gunshot wound to his head.
Stuart has posted the $10,000 bail set for his charges and has been released from custody. He has reportedly been suspended from the department with pay.
Neighbors described Stuart as a "nice guy" and say they were shocked by what occurred.
"He's quiet," neighbor Theresa Remshard tells CBS3 Eyewitness News. "He keeps to himself. He's very, very quiet. He's a good guy."
Police aren't giving details about what prompted the shooting.
