New Study Looks At CT Scan Use In Children

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A new study takes a look at the use of CT scans in children.

It is a situation that can certainly frighten parents and raise questions for physicians. A child suffers head trauma and is rushed to the emergency room.

Does the physician order a CT scan right away? Clearly a CT scan can give a better look at the brain. However, there is unnecessary exposure to radiation if severe trauma is not present.

According to a new report in the journal Pediatrics, physicians should spend some time evaluating the patient to see if there is damage from a clinical standpoint before they turn to the reflex of a CT Scan. It is an interesting report because CT scans are associated with an increase in radiation, and if we can prevent uncecessary exposure, it is also a good thing.
