PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - We have known for over a quarter of a century that it is important to watch our cholesterol, but what once was very straight-forward has become a bit more complicated thanks to genetic research. At recent count we have twenty-one separate genetic variations, that we know of, linked to high cholesterol. Interestingly enough some are associated with cholesterol elevations in men and others in women. At this point, this information will have no impact on current treatments, but there will definitely be studies and new treatments in the coming years. We hope to get to the point where we can pinpoint cholesterol issues linked to hear disease and attack them.
