New Regulations For Pennsylvania CDL Holders

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  Thanks to recent changes in state and federal regulations, Pennsylvania's commercial drivers' license holders now will have to navigate some new hurdles.

PennDOT is now requiring CDL holders applying to renew their licenses to show up in person at a photo license center to present paperwork, documenting proof of citizenship and residency.

And, those applying for a CDL permit must follow those steps and show proof they hold a standard driver's license before submitting an application.

Kara Templeton, who runs PennDOT's Bureau of Licenses, says there's a change for school bus drivers who hold CDLs and are required to take an annual physical.

"Most insurance companies will cover the costs for a physical exam once per year. By extending the state's requirement for a physical examination to once every 13 months, it reduces out-of-pocket expenses for school bus drivers without jeopardizing roadway safety," Templeton said.

She says changes in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requirements prompted the adjustments in the state's CDL regulations.
