Neighbors Raise Voices over Phila. Airport Noise
Another community workshop on Philadelphia International Airport noise was held on Tuesday night in Tinicum Township. The Delaware County community is a stone's throw from the runways.
KYW's Hadas Kuznits reports the presentation was the airport's way to try to make peace with its neighbors, as officials presented a study of what they've been trying to do to cut down on noise (see related story).
Airport noise abatement manager Jon Collette explains that it's a way to show residents they're taking their noise issues into consideration:
"We've taken community input over the last couple of years and we've come up with a list of suggested noise abatement measures. We've gone to the various groups such as the FAA and airlines and asked if things can be implemented. Then, from that list, we've come out with recommended program measures of things we'd like to do to try to reduce noise throughout the region."
He says with the extension of one of the runways, the airport expects additional noise in Southwest Philadelphia, which will be eligible for noise insulation.
So what do residents think of the noise study?
"Nothing that I didn't already know. The airport's here, it makes a lot of noise, and we have to live with it."
A public hearing is being held in Essington on Wednesday, where residents will be asked for their input.
