Gov. Murphy Requests To Rejoin Environmental Pact

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Gov. Phil Murphy is asking member states of a regional environmental pact to let New Jersey rejoin the group.

The Democrat said in a statement Monday that he wrote to the nine governors making up the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative to request returning to the group.

Former Republican Gov. Chris Christie announced in 2011 that New Jersey was leaving the cap-and-trade program. It's made up of New England and mid-Atlantic states working to reduce carbon emissions from power plants.

Murphy signed an executive order in January to put New Jersey back in the group, but rules require that member states agree to let non-members join.

The money the program raises is distributed to participating states for clean energy programs.

A message left with the initiative wasn't immediately returned.
