Lower Merion to Upgrade Parking Meters
New parking meters are coming to Lower Merion, Pa. and the new meters have some high-tech features that township officials believe drivers will like.
KYW's Brad Segall reports the township is moving to digital meters that feature a button that gives consumers ten minutes of free time in case they have to run a quick errand. The meters will also accept reloadable smart cards which township manager Doug Cleland says we're seeing more and more of around the country:
"And I think they are a popular matter for people that don't have coin but can carry a credit card in their wallet or in their purse and therefore not have to fish for change and can also get money back onto their card if they don't use all their time."
Down the road he says you may also be able to add time to your meter from your cell phone.
Lower Merion is spending about $600,000 to replace about 1,600 meters -- the bulk of them in the business districts of Ardmore and Bryn Mawr.
