Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Post-Irene Whitewater Rafting in the Poconos

STROUDSBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- This week, Pocono Mountain resorts brushed off Hurricane Irene with a shrug and rumbled ahead with Labor Day weekend preparations.

And there's a lot on tap for the holiday.

The more adventurous getaway seekers this weekend are looking forward to traditional whitewater rafting, now in faster-flowing mountain streams.  Pocono Vacation Bureau director Carl Wilgus tells me that good weather has made it a bit easier than anticipated.

"Dry, warm weather will mitigate some of the stream flows," he says.

Casinos, golf courses, resorts, and outdoor venues all have special events on tap.

There's the 50th anniversary celebration of the Lake Wallenpaupack scenic boat tour, a production about the Andrews Sisters at the Shawnee Playhouse, and a most unusual event at Shawnee Mountain: the annual Pocono Garlic Festival.

"I even understand there's such a thing as garlic ice cream," Wilgus tells me.  Won't have to worry about vampires there.

Check it all out at www.800poconos.com.

Enjoy the holiday!
