Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Gettysburg, Pa.
By Jay Lloyd
GETTYSBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- Gettysburg is a magnet for Civil War buffs the year round. But this week it's an ideal fall getaway.
The blazing colors in the mountains surrounding the quiet town that became a pivot point in American history combine to frame the narration of a unique struggle.
Millions visit here every year. Bill Grider, visiting from Indianapolis, described what drew him here.
"The sacrifice, the commitment, and the dedication of the men who fought here for the preservation of our country," he said.
----
"It gives me goosebumps," added his son, Luke.
My wife and I self-toured the battlefield and the site of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address by car, using the free maps. Or you can use guides, narrated bus tours, and/or rental CDs.

Betty Lammers, from Minnesota, stopped at the visitors' center. Her advice: "You must see the cyclorama. You can hear the battle and you can see things."
Afterward, you can dine at the historic (1757) Fairfield Inn, once a makeshift hospital for retreating Confederate soldiers.
