Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Getting Around In NYC

A popular tune trumpets the virtues of a "Sunday in New York."

This week, KYW's Jay Lloyd reports that it reflects the real Gotham lifestyle as long as you don't move around too much.

But getting around New York is actually a snap!

The Bronx is up and the Battery's down. You can ride efficiently in a hole in the ground, or go by bus.

Cabs are plentiful, not terribly expensive, and they move like lightning -- as long as it's a weekday. On weekends, it all becomes one cacophonous, gridlocked mass of confusion.

For instance, on a recent trip a subway train to the Lower East Side stopped at the 4th Street station and everyone was told to get off. No reason, no apparent connection to anything, while New Yorkers were cursing in more languages than you ever knew existed.

So, we cabbed it the rest of the way. Bad move. Street fairs, festivals, and flea markets had traffic routed via Canarsie. (Not really.)

Saturday nights create surface gridlock anywhere that's home to a popular restaurant or club: the Village, Soho, Tribeca, or Chelsea.

Some subway lines on weekends are down for maintenance, lines are switched to unfamiliar platforms, and some don't even follow the weekday routes. So plan carefully and think longingly of SEPTA.
