Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Endless Mountains

by KYW's Jay Lloyd

Enjoying outdoor fun and staying cool can be a challenge in the hot summer months.  But the coolest Pennsylvania getaway isn't far away.

Up in the northeast tier of Pennsylvania, the Endless Mountains have the altitude, tree-shaded roads and trails, cool mountain streams and lakes -– everything that it takes to bring the temperatures down to easy sleeping nights and no-sweat days.

Showing me around the vast four-county region, tourism director Jean Gasper pointed out one Sullivan county town to illustrate the pleasant isolation:

"The location has the only traffic light in the county."

A traffic jam here is two cars going in the same direction on the same day.

But you'll find classic inns and bed & breakfasts, wineries, kayaking, golf, antiquing -– even unusual events.

"They have lawnmower races almost every Saturday throughout the summer."

But there are also weekly arts festivals, county fairs and antique markets.  Explore some of the historic villages like Eagles Mere and Tunkhannock.  When people ask,  "Where do the Endless Mountains, end?"  Locals are likely to reply, "Don't know. The last guy to look hasn't come back yet."
