Jail Time for Teen in Drunken Rape Case
A Philadelphia teenager has been sentenced to prison time for the alcohol-fueled rape of an unconscious classmate who later died. KYW's Mike DeNardo reports 18-year-old Shareef Clemons will spend at least six years behind bars.
Judge Ellen Ceisler sentenced Clemons to six-to-12 years in prison, after his guilty plea for the rape of 15-year-old Kierra Johnson in March 2008.
The two, along with 19-year-old Juan Williams, skipped class at the CEP school and spent the day drinking at Williams' home.
Prosecutors say the two raped Johnson, who had a blood-alcohol level of .433. Investigators say she died of alcohol poisoning later that day.
The teenagers were not charged with murder. Defense attorney Jack McMahon says his client has accepted responsibility for his role:
"He's going to have to pay a punishment of six years in the state prison for a young man, and this poor girl lost her life. So it's tragedy and tragedy."
Johnson's mother Ernestine Harding had mixed emotions:
"I felt like he deserved more. But I'm glad it's over."
Williams, who also pleaded guilty, is already serving a five-to-ten-year sentence.
