Hot Draw For Out-Of-State College Students
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Diva Malinowski, a Connecticut high school senior, toured ten colleges and got acceptances from each before making a choice of North Dakota State in Fargo where 55% of the school's 14,500 students are from other states.
This surge is the result of the state's concern about falling college numbers – and with low tuition; a broad campaign to "sell" North Dakota; as well as a jump of 30 points in the ranking by the National Science Foundation, the school is attractive.
Both University of North Dakota and North Dakota State have recruited through magazines and cable channels including the Comedy Channel. Research indicates that 39% of non residents remain in the state at least one year after graduation.
Those who stayed helped reverse a decades-long population decline with North Dakota now on the verge of breaking the 1930 record of 681,000 people -- benefitting Fargo's economy.
