Halloween Pet Safety Tips
Philadelphia (CBS) -- It's trick or treat time again, but that doesn't necessarily apply to our best friends.
Although candy may be plentiful this time of year, keep those dangerous sweets away from both your dogs and cats. Chocolates are especially dangerous and extremely toxic, so steer them clear from your pet's way, but candy of any kind can cause problems, especially sweets or gum that may contain the sweetener xylitol. Keep your vet's number handy in case of emergency. And also know the ASPCA's Poison Control Center's number which is 888-426-4435.
Other safety tips include never leaving candles unsupervised at ANY time. So keep safety a priority and keep an eye on your lit pumpkins. It's too easy for a curious pet to quickly knock over.
Dogs and cats can become frightened or nervous with so much activity at the front door. Always make sure your pets have the proper ID at all times. Be aware of your pet's location so there's no bolting out the front door unexpectedly. In fact, keep your pet safely out of harm's way.
