Governor's Attorney General Pick Is Kane's Ex-Chief Deputy
HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- Bruce Castor's tenure as acting attorney general may be a short one.
Less than a day after Kathleen Kane's resignation took effect, Governor Wolf has nominated her former top deputy Bruce Beemer to serve out the final few months of her term.
Governor Wolf's nomination of former First Deputy Attorney General Bruce Beemer is supported by Republican leaders of the GOP-controlled Senate, where he will need a two-thirds vote for confirmation.
But the Senate is not scheduled to return to session until the last week of September. Drew Crompton, chief counsel for Senate Republicans, says Senate leaders would like to come back sooner, but he says there are logistical matters.
"There's a ten day requirement, at the very least, for financial interest statements. Members of our caucus will likely want to speak or meet with the nominee, and then there needs to be a hearing as well."
Acting Attorney General Bruce Castor has released a statement saying he will do "all within [his] power" to see that the office is in "the best possible shape" whenever the next attorney general arrives.
