Gender Gap The Focus Of Equal Pay Day

By Jim Melwert

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It's Equal Pay Day, today, designed to point out the gender-gap when it comes to pay in America.

Organizers such as the National Committee on Pay Equity say today is the day the average woman has to work into 2012 to equal what the average man made in 2011.

Julia Cumberbatch from Delaware County, says, over her career in pharmaceuticals, she's seen the gender gap narrow.

"As the next generation is coming up, it's equalizing even more and more, as women and men are achieving great things and the distinctions between the genders is becoming less important. But, it is frustrating that in 2012, we still have a bit of a hurdle to get over."

But, she adds, it hasn't been easy.

"It's frustrating. I think we've made a lot of stride in women achieving the same or even better in some cases compared to men based upon merit, but it's a harder climb. It takes more effort, takes more focus from the female. And I think sacrificing more on the personal front to achieve as much as a man."

Groups say census data show the difference in pay by gender, averages out to over $10,000 a year, enough they say over the course of a career, to buy two houses.
