Food Service Workers Gather In Philadelphia To Honor Philando Castile
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Dozens of Philadelphia School District employees held a vigil on Thursday night to honor Philando Castile, who was killed earlier this month by a Minnesota police officer.
Cafeteria workers, staff and teachers joined together outside Benjamin Franklin High School to remember Philando Castile, who worked in St. Paul, Minnesota as a cafeteria supervisor.
"Our union represents a lot of people of color," said Saudia Durrant.
Durrant is with Unite Here, the union that represents lunchroom workers and says they wanted to show support for Castile.
"We really wanted to make it an issue, and a conversation on assessing racism, assessing how we as a union can do our part to make sure a change comes about to these kinds of issues."
"We have to take the right approach and make sure this doesn't happen again," said Ernie Bennett. He represents the maintenance and transportation union, and says this is a symbol of solidarity for a fellow school district worker. "It's just the time for us to start coming together and heal our great country."
