Food Festival In Manayunk To Raise Money For Orphans

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A culinary benefit is on tap Wednesday night in Manayunk. It is called EATS (Eat Along The Street) and it is for a very special cause.

Moon Krapugthong is chef at Chabaa Thai in Manayunk and a native of Thailand. She and Judy Spielman of Space by Spielman, visited her mother land last year, and in particular an orphanage that serves several hundred children from preschool to high school.

Judy says Moon wanted to do something for those children.

"When they are 16 or 18, they don't really have any marketable skills, so that's why they end up on the streets of Bangkok. So, what we're trying to do is build a kitchen and teach them how to cook and hopefully they'll get training to go into the culinary industry."

The benefit is being held at the Propper Brothers building on Levering Street from 6-9 p.m. The food festival is also a kickoff to the Manayunk Eco Arts Festival which begins Friday.
