Father Of 15-Year-Old Driver Who Crashed SUV, Killing 3, Gets Prison Time

By Kim Glovas

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A New York father will serve six-and-a-half to 16 years in state prison for allowing his underage daughter to drive. A subsequent accident, nearly a year ago, killed three teenagers from Bucks County.

Michael Ware was sentenced Thursday on three counts each of involuntary manslaughter and recklessly endangering another person.

The charges stem from an accident on August 30, 2014. Ware told the Wayne County Court that he gave his 15-year-old daughter the keys to a Chevrolet Suburban, and she drove herself and five others to breakfast.

Police say she was speeding when she lost control and the vehicle flipped several times, killing three boys from Council Rock South High School; Shamus Digney, Cullen Keffer and Ryan Lesher. All of the boys were 15 years old.

The District Attorney in the case said this was an accident that could have been prevented, and was caused by quote, "one reckless and negligent father."

The Wayne County judge who sentenced Ware called his behavior "reckless," "irresponsible" and "preventable."

Ware has also been ordered to pay $73-thousand in restitution.

His daughter, Julia Ware, now 16, was ordered to do community service and make restitution.
