Prediction Model Shows Eagles Still Have 44-Percent Chance At Playoffs

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It's certainly understandable if you want to give up on the Philadelphia Eagles.

After their blown 16-3 first quarter lead against the Dolphins on Sunday, compounded by an injured Sam Bradford, the Eagles are 4-5 and many Philly fans have lost faith in their football team. In fact, most have lost confidence in their once lauded head coach Chip Kelly.

Mathematically speaking, despite how grim it may look, thanks to the hideous NFC East the Eagles are not dead yet. In fact, according to FiveThirtyEight.com's Elo-based model, the Eagles have a 44-percent chance of making the playoffs and a 40-percent chance of winning the division.

The 5-5 New York Giants are neck-and-neck with the Birds, as they have a 46-percent chance of making the playoffs and 42-percent chance of winning the NFC East, according to the model.

The model gives the Eagles an 80-percent chance to improve to 5-5 with a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this weekend. The Giants are idle.

The Elo-based model was developed by FiveThirtyEight's Nate Silver. It calculates each team's chances of advancing to the playoffs and winning the Super Bowl based on 20,000 simulations which constantly updates each week right here.

Pro Football Focus Fantasy Director, Mike Clay, actually believes the Eagles are the favorites to win the NFC East. Clay believes the Eagles will be favored in five of their remaining seven games.

The Eagles beat the Giants 27-7 in Week 6 in Philadelphia and these two teams will have their rematch at Met Life Stadium on January 3rd, the final game of the season.

Both the Eagles and Giants are given a one-percent chance to win Super Bowl 50.

So you're telling me there's a chance?
