Eagles Place Tags on Vick, Akers
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Eagles have made a couple of moves designed to keep a couple of key players in Philadelphia.
The team announced today that they have placed the franchise tag on quarterback Michael Vick and the transition tag on kicker David Akers.
Vick, of course, had a comeback season for the ages in 2010, setting career highs in numerous statistics including yards (3,018) and touchdown passes (21). He was the NFC's starter in the Pro Bowl, and named the NFL "Comeback Player of the Year."
Akers led the NFL in scoring, with 143 points in 2010. His season ended on a down note, however, as he missed two key field goals in the Eagles' 21-16 playoff loss to the Packers.
The franchise tag basically would give Vick a one-year deal for a substantial salary.
The transition tag gives the Eagles the right of first refusal to any free agent offers Akers may receive this offseason.
However, with the players' collective bargaining agreement set to expire, the future of both these tags could be changed in any new agreement.
