Drexel Basketball Players Surrender to Robbery Charge

Two Drexel University basketball players -- including the team's leading scorer -- have surrendered to authorities after being accused along with a third student of taking part in a home invasion robbery last week in West Philadelphia.

KYW's Steve Tawa reports from Southwest Detectives headquarters that investigators say the team's starting point guard, Jamie Harris, 21 (above right) -- who averaged 14.5 points per game last season -- and backup forward Kevin Phillip, also 21 (middle right),  each had weapons when they stormed into a female student's apartment last Wednesday near 36th Street and Lancaster Avenue (see previous story).

Investigators say a third man, Devon Bond (bottom right), was first in because he knew the woman.

Surveillance video shows Bond ringing the woman's doorbell, according to police. They say she buzzed him in.

Then, according to  police lieutenant John Walker,  Bond jammed a newspaper between the door and the lock in the entrance, had a conversation for about 15 minutes with the woman, and left.

Two minutes later, the three appeared at her door, according to detectives. It is alleged that Bond faked being  a victim and was thrown to the floor.

Police allege the two basketball players demanded money while pointing guns at Bond and the female victim.  She had no money but they ran off with her iPhone, according to police.

Bond -- who is from Marlton, NJ -- was arrested on Thursday and charged Friday with robbery, theft, conspiracy, and related offenses.

The other two, Phillip and Harris, fled to their hometown of New York, according to police, but they gave themselves up here in Philadelphia this morning.

Attorney Robert Lynch represents Harris:

"He's never been in trouble before."

Lynch says Harris voluntarily turned himself in, and they'll vigorously defend him:

"My client is a full-scholarship basketball student, starting point guard at Drexel, and we look forward to our day in court."
