Cops: Suspect Strikes Victim With Cane, Throws Lit Plastic Bag At Him

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A man had to be hospitalized after police say he was struck several times with his own cane by a suspect who then lit a plastic bag on fire and threw it at him.

Authorities say around 5:09 a.m. on March 13, the victim and a witness were in front of the Philadelphia Brotherhood Mission on the 400 block of East Girard Avenue when two males exited a vehicle.

VIDEO:

Police say the first suspect, who was armed with a baseball bat, broke the glass door and then chased the witness into the street, striking him in the leg with the baseball bat.

The second suspect, police say, took the victim's cane and struck him in the left shoulder multiple times and then lit a plastic bag on fire and threw it at him.

The suspect then entered the vehicle with the first suspect and fled.

Police say he allegedly threatened, "I am coming back to burn this place down."

Authorities say the suspects were last seen east on Girard Avenue towards I-95.

The victim suffered injuries to his shoulder and was treated at Episcopal Hospital.

Police describe the first suspect as a white male, 20-25 years old, 5'7", 160 pounds, wearing a plaid shirt and orange baseball cap with what appeared to be a little league baseball bat on the front.

The second suspect is described as a white male, 50-years-old, 280 pounds, with gray hair, wearing a gray shirt and jeans.

Police say they were driving in a light-colored Kia.
