Code Of Conduct For Hockey Parents
HATFIELD (CBS) - Many area athletic organizations are requiring parents to sign a code of conduct form promising they will behave themselves in the stands during games or their child will not be able to play the sport.
Wissahickon middle school ice hockey head coach Michael Wolf gives such a form to every parent:
"Growing up in the days of the Broad Street bullies when everybody expected everybody go out on the ice and kill people. Some parents think that their kids play hockey that is what they are supposed to do. It's a game that kids are supposed to enjoy playing to have fun and not kill each other."
Is parent behavior that bad?
"I've seen everything in the years. I've probably coached for 10 years at different levels. At the Mite level, which is the youngest level, I've seen parents throw gloves on the ice. I've seen parents run onto the ice. I've seen and heard parents cursing at refs at other teams and other players."
Wolf says the code of conduct is necessary and he's seen a definite improvement in parent behavior after they sign the form.
