Charity Bicycle Collection is Saturday AM in Bucks County

By Kim Glovas

NEWTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- If you have an old bicycle or sewing machine taking up space in your garage, a charitable group wants you to donate it today at a collection point in Newtown, Bucks County.

It's called "Bikes for the World," and the collection is taking place from 9am to 1pm at Pennswood Village, a retirement community on Route 413.

Spokesman George Kurz that says last year quite a few items were collected:

"We got 138 bicycles and six sewing machines."

And where are the collected items sent?

"There are multiple locations they go to in Central America, the Caribbean," Kurz says.  "I think there are seven locations in Africa and one as far away as the Philippines."

Kurz says donors are asked to make a $10 pledge to help ship the bikes and machines.  He says the bikes are then sold at nominal cost to locals who use them for transportation to school, work, and other places. The sewing machines are used to give someone a way to make a living.
