Business Award To Kensington Farmer
By John Ostapkovich
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Professional Women's Roundtable is marking its tenth anniversary by giving its annual PoWeR award Thursday evening to a woman entrepreneur who really gets her hands dirty.
"We've been here 15 years," says this year's winner, Mary Corboy. "This particular site was an EPA SuperFund clean-up site."
But now it's Greensgrow Farms, an oasis of organic farming and produce and plant sales in Kensington, where Corboy calls herself chief farmhand. She strolls among greenhouses ready to transition to fall crops.
"Starting off to where we only did sales to restaurants to now we do about 95 percent is actually direct to the public through our farm stand and Community Supported Agriculture where people get a share."
The one acre plot on East Cumblerland Street is on the leading edge of the green movement. All right, a little brown...
"We're always working the soil and all those carriages in Philadelphia have to get rid of their manure somewhere."
Greensgrow Farms holds its free fall festival on October 6th.
