PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The brother of NBA player Dion Waiters died Tuesday night in Philadelphia.

Police say 21-year-old Demetrius Pinckney died in South Philadelphia after officers found him lying on his back with severe head injuries.

Authorities found a green dirt bike several feet away.

He was pronounced dead at 8:01 p.m.

Philadelphia investigators say they received a report of gunshots fired in the 2400 block of Morris Street shortly before 8 p.m.

Authorities were told by witnesses that another male, was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in a private car.

Police say there apparently was some type of argument or disturbance between the riders of several dirt bikes and quads and there was a chase that involved gunfire.

Waiters took to Instagram to express shock over the news.

Sam Presti, Oklahoma City Thunder Executive Vice President and General Manager released the following statement:

"We were saddened to hear the news of the passing  of Dion's brother, and he has our full support. Dion and his family are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."

Waiters will miss Wednesday's game against the L.A. Clippers.

Police are treating this as a homicide investigation.
