Board Allows Beer Sales At More Businesses With Gas Pumps

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Liquor Control Board has approved several new licenses allowing establishments with gas pumps to sell six-packs of beer, but it's not exactly the major breakthrough that some are portraying it to be.

Governor Wolf sent a letter to Liquor Control Board members urging them to "free the six pack" and approve the licenses. But Liquor Control Board spokeswoman Elizabeth Brassell says it's really nothing new.

"There are a number of gas stations that currently sell beer to go. And it's not a new precedent, it's not a new policy. We're maintaining the position we've held for some time and the position that was upheld by Commonwealth Court," she said.

But, Brassell says, that Commonwealth Court ruling has been appealed. The Liquor Control Board had held off for a while on approving more of these licenses, but has moved ahead now after getting signals that a ruling from the state Supreme Court is still some time off.

None of the licenses granted Wednesday are for southeastern Pennsylvania.
