Authorities: Local Woman Concealed Child's Death To Continue Receiving Government Benefits
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Authorities say a Philadelphia woman concealed the death of her daughter in order to continue receiving Supplemental Security Income payments.
Officials say 38-year-old Nakia Calicat, of Philadelphia, gave birth in December of 2006 and filed for SSI benefits in 2007.
Authorities say the child died in July of 2010 but the Social Security Administration was not informed of the death until August of 2013.
At that time, officials say SSA sent her a notice that the benefits for her child would be terminated.
In October of 2013, authorities say Calicat told an SSA employee her child was still alive. Officials say she lied again in August of 2014 about her child being alive.
Authorities say between July of 2010 and August of 2013 Calicat illegally received about $26,224 on behalf of her deceased child.
Officials say Calicat pleaded guilty to concealing the death of her daughter to receive SSI payments.
Authorities say she faces a possible advisory sentencing guideline range of at least six to 12 months in prison, up to three years of supervised release, restitution of $26,224 and a $1,400 special assessment.
