Atlantic City Church Surrounded By Violence Is Relocating

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (CBS) --  A Church located in a dangerous section of Atlantic City will get to move to a safer location, thanks to the generous gift from a retired Jewish businessman from Cherry Hill.

For the past nine years, City of Hope Worship Outreach Center has been located on South Carolina Street in Atlantic City, feeding the homeless and helping others in need, but the neighborhood it's located in is riddled with violence.

"There's been about 15 shootings and killings on that street," Pastor Kenneth Applewhite told KYW Newsradio.

Applewhite says the violence was unnerving and they had prayed for a miracle.

"It was time for us to move, so we can be relaxed and be a little safer," he said.

They spied a plot of land on Black Horse Pike in nearby Egg Harbor Township and called the owner, James Horowitz, who's in his 80s.

"I guess he was a pretty good salesman," Horowitz said.

Horowitz says the land is worth about $100,000, but he decided to give it to City of Hope for free.

"I try to do good where I can do good," he explained.

Applewhite says City of Hope needs to raise about $300,000 to build their new church...they hope to break ground in the spring.
