Area Ice Cream Parlors Up For Best In America

By Ray Boyd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- As we work our way through spring, we make our way toward hotter and hotter temperatures. As the mercury rises, so do does our desire for ice cream.

Whether you happen to be in Philadelphia this summer, or if you escape to the New Jersey Shore, you'll have the opportunity to visit one of the best ice cream parlors in America.

USA Today is in search of the best parlor and currently, they stand at the 20 best as they look to get to the definitive ten best.

On the list of 20 stands, Springer's Homemade Ice Cream in Stone Harbor, New Jersey and The Franklin Fountain in Philadelphia. They currently sit at No. 9 and No. 10 on the list respectively in the current standings.

Voting is open and ends on May 23 at noon.

The bios for Springer's and The Franklin Fountain read:

"Springer's Homemade Ice Cream occupies a historic building with the look and feel of an old-time ice cream parlor. Jersey Shore locals and vacationers can choose from over 50 flavors, including interesting options like Orange Pineapple, Potpourri or Teaberry."

"Stepping into Philadelphia's The Franklin Fountain is very much like stepping back into an American ice cream parlor and soda fountain circa 1915. Ice cream is made onsite, and ice cream sodas are drawn from a bronze and onyx soda fountain from 1904. The staff are even dressed in period attire, completing the feeling of authenticity."

For those who get their ice cream in Delaware, Hockessin's Woodside Farm Creamery also appears on the list at No. 7.
