3rd Times a Charm
It took 3 tries, but a 9th inning rally by the Phils, aided by several Chicago fielding errors, ended in a Phils 4-1 win over the Cubs in game 3 of the 4 set at Wrigley. The W, the Phils 1st since the all-star break. With the Phils struggling at the plate, Cole Hamels put on another good outing, allowing just 1 run thru 7 innings.
Down 1-0 entering the 9th, Greg Dobbs led off pinch hitting for Carlos Ruiz. Dobbs would fly out to left(1 out). Next batter, Brian Schenider pinching hitting for Wilson Valdez, draws a walk. In the pitcher's spot is Ross Gload, who walks putting men on 1st and 2nd. Victorino then strikes out(2 out).
In his 1st game back, Placido Polanco steps to the plate, and singles scoring Brian Schneider, to even it up at 1. Next up, Jimmy Rollins walks on 4 pitches. Cubs pitcher Carlos Marmol now facing Ryan Howard, throws a wild pitch scoring score Gload, Phils 2 Cubs 1. Howard is then intentionally walked to load the bases. Jayson Werth draws the walk, scoring Polanco, and it's 3-1 Phils.
In the 6th spot, Raul Ibanez hits a chopper to Cub's 1st baseman Derek Lee. Lee throws to 1st base, but no one's covering. Jimmy Rollins scores, and the Phils now lead 4-1. Brad Lidge enters for the save, and 4 batters later it's a final.
Roy Halladay takes the mound in the season finale Sunday night at 8:05. Pending on the Braves final Saturday night, the Phils will trail Atlanta by either 4 1/2, or 5 1/2 games in the NL East.
