'Girls Today, Leaders Tomorrow' Helps Young Ladies Build Self-Esteem

By Cherri Gregg

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A local non-profit is taking the time to groom at-risk girls to be the next generation of strong women leaders. The group has helped one Northeast Philadelphia girl find her true self.

"Girls Today, Leaders Tomorrow" is a program that helps at-risk girls build self-esteem and leadership skills through mentorship, says Ann Schmieg, President of Community Impact of the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania.

"What we really work on, we call it the six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, character, caring and citizenship."

Jasmin Reid, 18, entered the program in 2006 when she was in the 8th grade.

"I didn't think I was pretty, I didn't think I was good enough. And then when I entered the program, I learned to love myself."

Now she's graduating from high school and is headed to college.

"I learned that I don't have to be perfect, I'll just do my best and see where it goes from there."

Jasmin says she's paying it forward by mentoring other girls. And she'll show off her leadership skills on Thursday, when she gives a speech at the annual Women's Initiative gala.
