1 Injured, Cars Damaged As Railroad Spikes & Rocks Are Thrown From Overpass
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia police have arrested 18-year-old Blake Bowers for allegedly tossing railroad spikes and other debris at passing vehicles from an overpass in University City.
Police say it was about 8 p.m. Friday when calls started coming in. Someone was launching railroad spikes and rocks at moving cars on University Avenue from an overpass near the I-76 West on-ramp.
Lt. John Walker says one man suffered cuts to his face when the projectiles went through his windshield. Fortunately, nobody else was hurt.
"It was a very dangerous incident that happened out here," Walker said. "It could have been much worse."
At least four cars were damaged.
"They have very sharp edges being thrown at cars," Walker said. "You see the damage caused to these cars, with one impalement into the actual dashboard of the car."
Walker says a driver from one of the damaged vehicles jumped out of his car and chased down the alleged thrower, who is now in police custody.
That suspect faces a long list of charges, including aggravated assault.
