Running is something that I do for myself to stay physically and mentally healthy. As a busy mother, wife, student, employee, friend, daughter, etc., it's a great way to take a break from life and clear my mind.
I did not run, ever, until I was about 35. I could not run the mile in gym class, so I never believed I could do it. In my 30s, I taught with a friend who is an avid runner, and she invited me to a run/walk with an after-party. I had such a good time, I stuck with it!
I started running after I turned 40 as a way to help reduce my blood pressure and lower my fasting blood sugar. I never thought I would fall in love with running, but I did. I'm glad to say running worked as both my blood pressure and fasting blood sugar are now very healthy!
I started running to maintain my weight. It has now grown into a mental release for me. I have run three marathons. Proudly, I qualified and ran Boston in 2004.
I started running when I realized I needed to change my life. I was 14 and extremely overweight. I still remember the day I completed a mile without stopping, as well as a 5k under 35 minutes. I cried tears of joy for both and now I'm happy, healthy and training for 10 miles!
I didn't start running until age 37. I run a few 5ks a year, an occasional mud run or 10k, and I've done one half marathon. But mostly I run for exercise and to give my mind a break. It's my therapy.
I am slow like a turtle, but running is my sanctuary!
I run for my sanity. I run for those who can't run. I run to challenge myself.
I run for the same reason I go to the gym. At first it was about what I saw in the mirror. But now the beautiful and glorious thing about it is that there are so many good reasons to do it that have nothing to do with what you see in the mirror. I have found that it's about being strong in both body and mind. It's about pushing through and getting to the end – you feel beat up, but in your head you're like "YEAH!"
I started doing 5ks during my first deployment in Kuwait and became hooked on racing. While in the Reserves, I missed out on the Broad Street Run too many times as it fell on drill weekend, but now that I'm retired I can run it every year.
I run to try and beat my older sister.
I was never big into running. My dad is a runner and I've always been inspired by him.
I got into running for charity, as well as staying in shape. I really enjoy the crowds and energy of race day. There is nothing like it!
