Woman Trying To Fly Home To New York Ends Up In Barbados

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Azizgul Hussainzada is happy to be back home with her family in upstate New York, but talk about taking the long way.

Hussainzada boarded a flight in Oakland, California, that she thought would get her back home. Instead, she ended up in another country, CBS2's Dick Brennan reported.

Because she doesn't speak English, she had asked for boarding assistance when she was flying out of Oakland.

Instead, "they boarded her on the wrong flight," her son, Noorullah Maqsoodi, said. "And she had no idea where she ended up."

Hussainzada was supposed to fly to JFK Airport, then on to her home in Rochester.

But she wound up on a flight that took her to Barbados.

"When she got off in Barbados, she thought that she was in Rochester," Maqsoodi said. "And she was like, what happened to Rochester? This looks a lot different."

When Hussainzada didn't arrive in Rochester, her family tried to get answers from the airline, JetBlue.

"They told us that she's in JFK waiting for her flight, but she was in Barbados," her son said.

The family was also worried because Hussainzada is diabetic and didn't have her medication. They want to know how this could have happened.

"That's what's really puzzling is the fact that she didn't have a boarding pass and how she managed to get on an international flight and fly out of the country," Maqsoodi said.

JetBlue said it regrets the inconvenience caused. It has refunded the family and is investigating what happened, including a review of the boarding procedures.
