Workplace Safety Advocates Rally To Remember Those Killed While On The Job

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Several people gathered at a rally in the West Village Tuesday to remember the many workers killed or injured on the job in the past year.

At the corner of Seventh Avenue and 14th Street, where Nancy Pena's MTA bus driver husband William was killed by an alleged drunk driver, she joined workplace safety advocates in a call to action.

"No one deserves to lose their life when they're simply doing a job to provide for their family," Pena said.

White carnations were laid for Pena and 18 others lost in construction accidents in the city this year, WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported.

Vincent Alvarez, president of the NYC Central Labor Council, said these lives matter.

"There's still far too many dying. We're mourning for the dead but we're fighting for the living as well," he said.
