STONY BROOK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The Stony Brook University School of Medicine recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of its first graduating class.
As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported Monday, the graduating class looked much different this year than it did in 1974.
Dr. Janice Coleman is a successful obstetrician and gynecologist in South Carolina. She was among those who graduated from the Stony Brook medical school 40 years ago.
Vast Increase In Opportunities For Women Over 40 Years At Stony Brook Medical School
Back then, women made up only 30 percent of her graduating class. But in 2014, women make up 50 percent.
"Sometimes I'm very proud that I've participated and pushed for a lot of the change -- just always assumed that when they were talking about surgeons they were talking about males," Coleman said. "The nursing staff was really glad to see us."
Coleman is one of more than 1,700 women who have graduated from the Stony Brook University School of Medicine.
