St. Peter's University Hospital Hosting Epilepsy Event Saturday

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) - Epilepsy has been around since ancient times, but remains a challenging condition, even today.

That's why St. Peter's University Hospital in New Brunswick is holding a special event called "Taking Control of Epilepsy" starting at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.

"We've really learned a lot about epilepsy, but I have to say, we have quite a long way to go still. The brain is a wily beast and there are lots of ways that we get surprised sometimes with how the brain functions or can become dysfunctional. As you can image, in the state of New Jersey, if you have recurrent episodes of seizure activity, you can't drive," Dr. Jeffrey Politsky with the epilepsy center at St. Peter's told WCBS 880's Pat Farnack. "If you have a commercial driver's license and you have a single event, you lose your commercial driver's license for five years. [There are] young families who are afraid of having epilepsy or being on medications because of family planning issues. So we try to take every patient as an individual and help them improve their life and live with epilepsy."

They'll discuss the newest treatments, diet, dealing with memory problems and more.
