Series Of Bomb Scares Has Staten Island Residents On Edge

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- The NYPD Bomb Squad has been busy investigating a series of elaborate bomb scares on Staten Island.

A number of inoperable devices that included clocks, wires, and plastic bottles were left out on the street, CBS 2's John Slattery reported.

The most recent discovery occurred in front of a home in Grymes Hill on Saturday. An object that looked like an improvised explosive device inside of a black backpack was found by sanitation workers on Duncan Road.

On Thursday a number of homes on Brentwood Avenue in Randall Manor were discovered after another backpack was discovered.

"A camouflaged backpack on the sidewalk in front of my neighbor's front walk," Carolyn Clark said.

The unattended bag was spotted by a man on the street neighbors said.

"He opened it and it looked like a bomb. It was assembled like a bomb and I said 'Ok' and called 911," Sue Gunaratne said.

On Sept. 3, another questionable bag was spotted near a Stop and Shop in New Springville. The store was evacuated.

The contents of the New Springville bag were the same as the others. Wires and plastic bottles in shrink wrap.

Concern among neighbors is growing.

"It scares me to death," Carolyn Clark said.

The incidents may have only been hoaxes but they were enough to give people the jitters and to spark evacuations.

The calls have required a sizable response from the fire department and police units.
