Sen. Chris Murphy Finishes Five Days On Food Stamps

HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) - Connecticut U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy is coming off a tough week, existing on food stamp benefits in protest of House efforts to cut those benefits by $20 billion.

For five days, Murphy existed on a meager daily diet consisting mainly of ramen noodles, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and a banana.

It's about all he could afford on the government's food stamp benefit of $4.80 a day.

How's he doing on this?

"Well, I'm hungry. I'm hungry for five days. I got home from Washington, D.C. last night, I got on the scale this morning and found out that I lost six pounds in four days," Murphy told WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau on Friday.

Murphy said he's learned you just can't afford nutritious food on the government allotment and you can't buy enough junk or processed food to fill you up.

"It's been eye-opening," he said.

Senate lunches were a bit tough, he said, when he was compelled to turn away the delicious cuisine that was being plated for his colleagues.

He said he'd like his political colleagues to try the food stamp challenge themselves.;
